Don't Tear Down What Jesus Built On

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” - Matthew 5:17

If you claim to follow Jesus, then you should see Scripture the way He did. And Jesus never once questioned the authority of God’s Word. Not the New Testament, and not the Old either.

In fact, right here in His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus makes it crystal clear. He said, I didn’t come to tear down the Law or the Prophets. That phrase refers to the entire Old Testament. Jesus didn’t show up to replace it. He came to fulfill it. To complete it. To live it out in perfect obedience and show us what it really meant all along.

The word “abolish” means to tear down or make void. So Jesus was saying, “I didn’t come to throw away the left side of your Bible.” And yet today, you’ll still hear people talk like the Old Testament no longer matters. Some want to unhook their faith from it entirely. But if Jesus treated it as permanent, eternal truth, then we should too.

Back then, people saw the Pharisees as the gold standard for holiness. They followed the Law religiously, even adding more rules on top just to be extra cautious. But Jesus wasn’t impressed with external religion. He wanted people to see that all of God’s Word pointed to Him. He didn’t come to sidestep it. He came to embody it.

So how do you treat God’s Word? Do you take it as seriously as Jesus did? Or do you cut corners, skip parts, or act like some of it doesn’t apply?

Let this verse serve as a reminder. God’s truth doesn’t have an expiration date. You’re not called to update it or downplay it. You’re called to believe it, build your life on it, and trust the One who came to fulfill every word.
