The Voice They Trust
"Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged." - Colossians 3:21
Whether you realize it or not, your words shape more than behavior. They shape belief. Over time, the way you speak to your kids becomes the way they think about themselves. And in many cases, how they imagine God speaks to them, too.
That’s a heavy responsibility, but it’s also a holy opportunity. You are not just raising children. You are shaping how they view authority, how they respond to love, and how they understand grace. If your voice is constantly harsh, they may assume God is always angry. If your correction lacks compassion, they might start to believe that God's approval is earned. But when you discipline with truth and love together, you give them a glimpse of their Heavenly Father.
Paul urges fathers not to provoke their children because discouragement doesn’t just wear them down. It warps how they see the world and themselves. Harshness may win the moment, but over time, it weakens the heart. Kids who grow up constantly criticized or shamed begin to live in fear, not freedom.
What your child hears from you today can echo into their walk with God tomorrow. The tone you set in your home teaches them whether they can come to God with confidence or if they need to perform for His acceptance. Your grace, patience, and honesty become the framework for how they approach their Creator.
That doesn’t mean you avoid correction. Discipline matters. But when it’s wrapped in gentleness and love, it builds trust instead of tearing down confidence.
As you lead, keep in mind, you are not just raising someone’s son or daughter. You are stewarding someone’s future relationship with their Father in heaven. Speak in a way that draws them to Him, not drives them away. The voice they trust now might just become the voice they hear when they pray later. Let yours sound like Jesus.
