You Cannot Move Forward While Looking Back
“For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” - Colossians 3:3
There is a strange pull that comes with new life in Christ. Part of you wants to move forward, but another part keeps glancing back. Old habits feel familiar. Old mindsets feel comfortable. Old identities still whisper your name. Even when God is clearly calling you into something new, the past has a way of trying to keep a grip on your attention.
Following Jesus means more than adding new behavior. It means releasing old ways of thinking. New life cannot grow where old identities are still in charge. If you keep defining yourself by who you were, you will struggle to live as who you are now. Growth stalls when the past keeps setting the direction. God does not call you forward while asking you to keep one foot behind you.
Looking back often feels safer than moving ahead. The past is known, even when it was unhealthy. The future requires trust. Letting go means surrendering control and admitting that you cannot bring everything with you into this next season. Old habits may feel comfortable, but comfort is not the same as life. What once fit you no longer does.
New life in Christ comes with a new center. Your life is now hidden with Him. That means your value, security, and direction are no longer rooted in past success or past failure. They are rooted in Christ. Holding on to old mindsets keeps pulling you back into cycles Jesus already freed you from. Letting go is not loss. It is alignment.
If you feel stuck, ask where you are still looking back. Pay attention to the labels you keep wearing and the patterns you keep defending. God is not asking you to erase your story, but He is asking you to stop living from it. New life requires new focus. You cannot move forward while constantly checking what is behind you. When you release what no longer defines you, space opens up for what God is building next.
