Change the Jersey
“So then, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come.” - 2 Corinthians 5:17
When an athlete joins a new team, one thing changes immediately. The jersey. It does not matter how long they played for the old team or how familiar that uniform feels. Once they belong somewhere new, they dress like it. Wearing the old jersey would send the wrong message, not just to others, but to themselves. In the same way, new life in Christ comes with a new identity, and that identity calls for a new way of living.
Following Jesus is not just about believing something new. It is about becoming someone new. When Christ saves you, He gives you a new name, a new standing, and a new future. That change is real, even when habits lag behind. Problems arise when behavior keeps reflecting an identity God already replaced. Old patterns feel natural because they are familiar, but familiar does not mean fitting anymore.
New identity requires intentional alignment. You start asking different questions. Does this match who I am now? Does this reflect the life Christ gave me? Does this decision point people toward Him or back toward who I used to be? Behavior does not create identity, but it does reveal what identity you are living from. Over time, actions either reinforce truth or pull you back into old narratives.
Changing the jersey can feel uncomfortable. Old habits do not leave quietly. Old labels still whisper. Growth takes effort and honesty. But living in the wrong uniform will always feel heavier than learning to wear the new one. Obedience becomes lighter when it flows from identity instead of obligation. You are not trying to earn a place on the team. You are learning how to live like you already belong.
If certain behaviors no longer fit, that is not failure. It is confirmation that something has changed. God is not asking you to pretend to be someone else. He is inviting you to live consistently with who He already made you to be. Take off what no longer represents you. Step into what does. Change the jersey. You belong to Christ now, and your life is meant to look like it.
