Boldness From The Peace Of Christ

"On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, 'Peace be with you!'" - John 20:19

Fear locks doors—sometimes literally, but more often in the heart. Even after hearing of resurrection, Jesus’s closest friends found themselves huddled together, afraid of what might happen next. They knew loss, dread, and uncertainty. It’s a place we recognize: when bad news or past failures freeze us, and we wonder where courage could possibly come from.

Jesus’s first words to His frightened disciples are not commands or rebukes, but a declaration: “Peace be with you!” Not the peace of comfortable circumstances, but the peace that comes from His very presence. It’s peace defined by victory over death itself. Here, peace is not the absence of trouble, but the presence of the risen King.

Notice that as soon as peace enters the room, fear begins to lose its grip. Resurrection power moves through closed doors, physical and emotional, offering the courage to step out again. In Acts, we learn these fearful men soon become bold witnesses—because resurrection life gives us security not in outcomes, but in the unchanging reality of Christ with us.

I’ll never forget the first time I spoke publicly about my faith. My hands shook so hard, my note cards fluttered like sparrows. I was terrified—of looking foolish, making mistakes, or offending someone. Just before standing up, I whispered, “Jesus, if peace is what marks resurrection people, could I have some?” The trembling never fully stopped, but as I spoke, a warmth settled over me. Courage was not the absence of butterflies, but the choice to trust Christ’s presence more than my own fear. That timid “yes” opened many future doors to share hope I’d nearly locked away.

Today, let the call to boldness take root in practical living. Begin by honestly identifying an area of your life—a situation, relationship, or dream—where fear or anxiety has kept you “locked in.” Before you face this fear, take a quiet moment to pray and invite Jesus to speak His peace over you right where you are. Then, challenge yourself to take one concrete action, however small, that moves you just beyond your comfort zone: maybe it’s speaking the truth kindly, offering forgiveness, reaching out for help, or taking a step toward a long-delayed dream. Trust that courage is not something you muster alone, but something that rises in you because Christ’s presence goes with you as you step out.

Jesus, breaker of every chain, I confess the doors I have locked out of fear—old wounds that echo, dreams I dare not chase, truths I hesitate to speak. Enter those places with Your resurrected peace. Remind me that Your presence is more real than my anxieties. Give me the boldness to move forward not by my own strength, but by the security of knowing You live within me. Turn my trembling into testimony. Let Your victorious life make me courageous, even when I feel weak. Amen.
