Living From Our New Identity

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” - Galatians 2:20

We spend so much of life trying to answer one question: Who am I? Achievement, relationships, reputation, or failure can become mirrors in which we search for an answer. But resurrection doesn’t patch together our self-image—it gives us a new identity altogether, grounded in Christ’s love and sufficiency.

Paul’s declaration is radical: his old life, with its performances and shortcomings, ended with Christ’s death. Now, his very existence is wrapped up in Jesus’s resurrection life. Living by faith means daily surrender—less about self and more about Christ shaping every part of us.

Our culture tells us to “find ourselves.” The gospel tells us to lose ourselves in Christ, and in doing so, to discover who we were always meant to be. This identity can’t be shaken by failure or puffed up by success. It’s a gift, not an achievement.

I carried a label for years—“not enough.” It echoed in classrooms, workplaces, even at home. When I met Jesus, part of me hoped He would help me earn worthiness. Instead, He invited me to die to that “not enough” and receive a new name: Beloved. I’ve failed since then, sometimes spectacularly, but every return to Christ’s grace is a return to who I truly am, not what others say or I fear. Resurrection life keeps reminding me: my story is caught up in His, and He is enough.

Today, carve out a few minutes to get honest about the ways you define yourself—grab a sheet and list every label, positive or negative, that’s shaped your view of who you are apart from Christ. As you write, let the old labels rise to the surface—words from the past, failures, accomplishments, or anything else that feels defining. When you’re finished, take a pen and draw a bold line through each one, writing “IN CHRIST” across the page as a declaration that your truest identity is forged by Jesus, not performance or shame. Then spend a moment listing the new truths that are yours in Christ—“forgiven,” “treasured,” “purposeful,” “free.” Let these words sink in, and choose one to carry with you for the rest of the day, letting it shape your choices and guide your thoughts as you live from the reality of resurrection.

Jesus, You know how quickly I forget who I am when old voices call me by names that chain me to the past. Today, I accept Your invitation to leave behind false identities and to live as one made new in Your love. Let Your life, not my history, define me. Teach me to live by faith, drawing from Your acceptance more than my own striving. Thank You for trading Your perfect life for my weary one. Help me walk in this new identity with freedom and joy. Amen.

Amen! I appreciate the addition of personal experiences in these devotionals. It helps me to apply in my own life, and sometimes gets me thinking about something I forgot. Thank you Pastor!
