The Mind Made New
“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above… Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” - Colossians 3:1-2
Every day, thousands of thoughts race through our heads; anxieties, daydreams, distractions. Left unchecked, our minds drift toward the urgent, the negative, or the trivial. But resurrection means our perspective can be lifted. Imagine the view from the mountaintop: the world below shrinks, clarity comes, and God’s horizon opens wide.
Paul calls us to fix our hearts and minds “above”—anchored to heaven, even as our feet walk earth. Resurrection perspective isn’t escapism; it’s integrating God’s reality into our everyday, recalibrating decisions and emotions by what is lasting and true.
When our minds are set on “above,” worries lose their tyranny, priorities reorder, and a quiet strength infuses daily life. God’s truth becomes our filter, turning anxious thoughts into prayers and daily choices into worship.
During a season of relentless deadlines and relentless worries, I realized anxiety was shaping my days more than gospel hope. A mentor gently challenged me: “What if your first thought each morning was ‘Jesus is alive’?” I tried it for a week, and it changed the tone of every day. Instead of starting with problems or plans, I set my mind—imperfectly, yes—on the risen Christ. Peace came, not because circumstances changed, but because my focus did.
Each morning this week, before you check your phone or begin your tasks, pause and declare, “Jesus, today my mind is Yours. Lift my thoughts to You.” You can place a verse that calls you heavenward (Colossians 3:1-2, Philippians 4:8) in a prominent spot. When a worry pops up, stop and turn it into a one-sentence prayer or praise. Train your mind upward, one thought at a time.
God of the heights and valleys, renew my mind today. Rescue me from thoughts that spiral downward. Anchor me in what is true, noble, and eternal. Let resurrection life seep into how I see every moment. When anxiety comes, re-direct my mind to Your presence and promises. Shape my perspective until Your truth becomes my first and deepest reality. Amen.
