Loving As Christ Loved Us
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” - John 13:34–35
How did Christ love? His love was not passive or sentimental; it was active, sacrificial, and unconditional. He loved the people who were overlooked by society. He touched the unclean, ate with sinners, and welcomed the marginalized. He patiently taught disciples who constantly misunderstood him. Ultimately, He laid down His life not for His friends, but for His enemies—for us. This is the benchmark for our love.
Loving as Christ loved means our love for others cannot be conditional on whether they are easy to love or whether they love us back. It is a love that gives without demanding anything in return. It’s a love that chooses to serve when it would be easier to walk away. It is a love that perseveres through conflict and pursues reconciliation. This kind of love is impossible in our own strength. It can only flow from a heart that has been transformed by the love of Christ.
When we love our neighbors in this sacrificial way, it becomes our greatest witness. Jesus said that this specific kind of love would be the defining mark of His followers. It’s not our perfect theology, our impressive church buildings, or our moral stances that prove to the world we belong to Him—it’s our love. A community of people who sacrificially care for one another is a powerful and attractive picture of the gospel in a broken and self-centered world.
Reflect on the past week. Which aspect of loving your neighbor was most challenging for you? Was it forgiveness, humility, or serving someone different from you? Take that specific challenge and view it through the lens of Christ's love for you. Ask yourself, "How has Christ shown me this kind of love?" Then, commit to taking one small, sacrificial step today to love a neighbor in that same way, relying not on your own strength, but on His.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for loving me with a love that knows no limits. Help me to see others as You do, and teach me to love with a servant’s heart—sacrificially, patiently, and without condition. Fill me with Your Spirit so that my love may point others to You. Give me courage to step out in faith, extending grace and kindness even when it’s not easy. Let Your love be the defining mark of my life. Amen.
