Growing In Your Identity
"But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen." - 2 Peter 3:18
Your identity in Christ is settled the moment you believe, but your understanding and experience of that identity continues to grow throughout your life. Spiritual maturity isn't about earning a better identity; it's about living more fully from the identity you already have.
Peter encourages believers to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." This growth has two dimensions: grace and knowledge. Growing in grace means experiencing more deeply the unmerited favor of God. Growing in knowledge means understanding more clearly who Jesus is and what He's done for you.
This growth isn't about becoming more worthy of God's love; you're already fully loved and accepted. It's about discovering more of what it means to be His beloved child. As you grow, you don't get a new identity, but you experience your existing identity more fully.
The ultimate purpose of this growth is God's glory. As you live more confidently from your identity in Christ, God receives glory through your life. When people see the security, joy, and purpose that come from knowing who you are in Him, they're drawn to the God who gives such incredible identity.
Identify one area where you need to grow in your understanding or experience of your identity in Christ. Maybe it's learning to rest in God's approval or walking in the confidence of being His child. Ask God to help you grow in that area and take one practical step toward that growth today.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me to grow in grace and knowledge of You. Deepen my understanding of what it means to be Your beloved child. Don't let me settle for shallow experience of my identity in You, but help me to live more fully from the truth of who I am. Use my growth to bring glory to Your name. In Your name, Amen.
