Living From Identity
"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." - Colossians 3:12
This week you've explored how your identity in Christ is meant to be lived out in practical ways. As God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, you're called to clothe yourself with character that reflects your true identity.
Paul begins with identity: "God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved." This isn't something you become through good behavior; this is who you already are in Christ. From this secure identity, you're called to "clothe yourselves" with godly character.
The metaphor of clothing is significant. Just as you choose what to wear each morning, you choose what character qualities to put on each day. You don't wear compassion to become loved; you wear it because you are loved. You don't put on kindness to earn acceptance; you put it on because you're already accepted.
Each quality listed—compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience—flows naturally from a secure identity in Christ. When you know you're chosen, you can show compassion to others. When you know you're loved, you can be kind even when it's not returned.
Today, as you get dressed physically, also choose to "clothe yourself" spiritually with the character qualities that flow from your identity in Christ. Remember that you put on these qualities not to become loved but because you are loved. Let your behavior flow from your identity rather than trying to create your identity through your behavior.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing me, making me holy, and loving me dearly. Help me to clothe myself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience as expressions of my identity in You. May my character reflect the security I have in Your love and the confidence I have in Your calling. In Jesus' name, Amen.
