Eternal Identity

"The one who conquers will inherit these things, and I will be his God, and he will be my son." - Revelation 21:7

As we’ve looked closely at our identity, we look forward to the ultimate reality that awaits us. Our identity in Christ isn't just for the here and now; it is an eternal state. The struggles, questions, and confusion of this life will one day fade, but your status as God's child will last forever.

In the final chapters of the Bible, God pulls back the curtain on eternity. He describes a new heaven and a new earth, where pain and tears are no more. And right in the center of this glorious vision, He reaffirms our identity: "I will be his God, and he will be my son.”

This promise is future-tense but present-reality. It means that the relationship you have with God today is the same relationship you will enjoy a billion years from now, only infinitely deeper and unhindered by sin. The term "inherit" implies that everything God has belongs to His children. We aren't just saved from hell; we are saved for a family inheritance that will never spoil or fade.

The phrase "the one who conquers" (or "overcomes") connects back to our faith in Jesus. It is our faith that conquers the world (1 John 5:4). This isn't about earning your spot through effort; it's about enduring in your identity through faith. The finish line of the Christian life isn't just a location (heaven); it's a confirmation of a relationship (sonship).

Take a moment to imagine your own funeral. What labels do you want people to remember you by? Write down one earthly identity you are holding onto too tightly (career, status, reputation) and physically release your grip on it. Then, write "Eternal Child of God" on a piece of paper and place it in your Bible or journal as a marker of what truly lasts.

Prayer:
Eternal Father, thank You that my identity in You has no expiration date. While everything else in this world is passing away, Your promise to be my God and make me Your child stands forever. Give me the eternal perspective to live for what lasts. Help me to loosen my grip on temporary titles and hold fast to my eternal inheritance. I look forward to the day when I will see You face to face and know fully what it means to be Yours. In Jesus' name, Amen.
