Run To Finish

“Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us.” — Hebrews 12:1 (CSB)

Ask anybody who's ever run a long race and they'll tell you the same thing. The hardest miles aren't the first ones. The first miles are easy. The crowd is loud, your legs are fresh, and you feel like you could do this all day. The hard miles are in the middle, after the excitement has worn off, before the finish line is anywhere in sight, when every part of you is negotiating for a reason to stop.

The Christian life is a distance event. The writer of Hebrews knows it, which is why he doesn't tell us to run faster. He tells us to run with endurance. The goal was never speed. The goal is to finish.

And to finish, he says two things have to come off. Every hindrance, and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Notice those are different. A hindrance isn't necessarily sinful. It might be a hobby, a screen, a schedule, a relationship, or an ambition that isn't wrong in itself but is quietly slowing you down. Nobody's going to confront you about it. It just costs you something every day.

Sin is different. Sin is the rope that wraps your ankles. It doesn't slow you down, it takes you down. And the word Hebrews uses suggests it's already wrapped, already familiar, already the thing that catches you every single time.

So where does the strength come from? Look at the first phrase. A large cloud of witnesses surrounds you. Read Hebrews 11 and you'll see who's in those stands. Ordinary people who trusted God through impossible things. Some saw the promise. Many didn't and trusted Him anyway. You are not the first person to run this stretch of road, and you are not running it by yourself.

The One who set the course is waiting at the end of it.

Name one hindrance and one sin that are costing you speed right now. Confess the sin honestly, and make one specific move this week to cut the hindrance loose. You can carry it and be slow, or you can lay it down and run. You can't do both.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, I want to finish this race well. Show me what I've been carrying that I was never meant to carry. Give me the courage to lay aside the things that are slowing me down and the honesty to confess the sin that keeps tripping me. Thank You that I'm not running alone. Give me endurance for the middle miles. In Jesus' name, Amen.
