New Every Morning

“Because of the Lord's faithful love we do not perish, for his mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness!” — Lamentations 3:22-23 (CSB)

Jeremiah wrote these words sitting in rubble. That's not a figure of speech. Jerusalem had fallen. The temple was destroyed. His people were being marched into exile. He'd warned them for forty years, wept over them, prayed for them, and watched every bit of it happen anyway.

And out of that, out of the worst season in his nation's history, he writes one of the most beautiful declarations of hope in the whole Bible.

Notice the phrase the CSB uses. The Lord's faithful love. That's the Hebrew word hesed, and English struggles to carry it. It isn't affection and it isn't sentiment. It's covenant love, the kind that made a commitment and will not break it. Hesed doesn't bend under pressure. It doesn't back off when you fail. It doesn't run out when you deserve nothing, which is most days for most of us.

That's why Jeremiah can say we do not perish. Not because the situation improved, it hadn't. Because the love holding him was stronger than the circumstances crushing him.

Then he adds the line we sing about. His mercies are new every morning. Not recycled from yesterday. New. Whatever you carried into last night, however you failed, whatever weight you fell asleep under, tomorrow morning there will be fresh mercy waiting for you before you're even awake enough to ask for it.

That is not denial and it isn't a man putting a brave face on it. It's a man who looked at the worst life can do and found God's faithfulness still standing in the middle of it. GREAT IS YOUR FAITHFULNESS.

Before you go to sleep tonight, write down every mercy you can name from today. Small ones count. Then wake up expecting new ones. You can start tomorrow carrying today, or you can start it carrying His mercy. He's already decided which one He's offering.

Prayer
Faithful Father, Your mercies are new every morning and I have never once used them up. Thank You for a love that made a covenant and refuses to break it, a faithfulness that doesn't waver when I do, and a grace that meets me fresh before I even open my eyes. Great is Your faithfulness. I rest in that tonight. In Jesus' name, Amen.
