One Generation To The Next

“One generation will declare your works to the next and will proclaim your mighty acts.” — Psalm 145:4 (CSB)

Every family passes something down. Sometimes it's a name, a recipe, a piece of land, or a way of doing things nobody ever questions. Some of it's worth keeping and some of it isn't, but the passing down happens either way. Nobody sits their kids down and formally hands them their temperament. It transfers anyway.

The psalmist has something more deliberate in mind. He pictures a chain of testimony running from one generation to the next, each one declaring what God has done. And a chain like that doesn't maintain itself. It takes people willing to say out loud not just what they believe, but what they've seen God do.

So here's the question worth sitting with today. What are the young people in your life actually learning from you?

Not from your words at church. From watching you on a hard Tuesday. Are they watching somebody walk through difficulty with trust, or watching somebody come apart? Because both of those are teaching. The only question is what.

That includes your kids, but it isn't limited to them. It's the nephew, the young couple two rows back, the teenager you coach, the new believer who watches how you talk about your boss. Somebody younger is taking notes on what a persevering faith looks like, and they're getting their sample size from you.

The most valuable thing you will ever leave behind isn't financial. It's the testimony of a life that trusted God through every season and said so loudly enough that the next generation had something to stand on.

You're writing that legacy right now, in the way you handle today.

Pick one young person in your life and make a plan to invest in them this month. Tell them one real story of God's faithfulness, including a hard part. You can leave them a memory of you, or a reason to trust Him. Only one of those outlives you.

Prayer
Lord, help me be intentional about what I'm passing down. Let the next generation see a faith in me that's real, honest about hard things, and anchored in You. Use my life to declare Your works to the people who come after me, and give me the courage to tell them the whole story. In Jesus' name, Amen.
