When the Waters Are Shaken
"The second angel blew his trumpet, and something like a great mountain, burning with fire, was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood." - Revelation 8:8
The scene described in Revelation 8 is almost unimaginable. A blazing mountain plunges into the sea, turning a third of it to blood. The oceans, which cover most of the earth’s surface, will become a place of death and destruction. One-third of marine life will perish, ships will be wrecked, and the stench of decay will fill the air. This isn’t just an ecological disaster, it’s a vivid reminder of how fragile and dependent we are on God’s provision.
Think about the oceans today. They provide food, transportation, jobs, and even climate regulation. The marine ecosystem supports countless forms of life, from the smallest plankton to the largest whales. Yet in an instant, with the sound of one trumpet, this intricate system is shaken.
What does this mean for you? It’s a reminder that the things we often rely on; our resources, systems, and even nature itself, are not ultimate. They are gifts from God, and without His sustaining hand, they can change in a moment.
How often do you thank God for these gifts? For the food on your plate, the jobs that sustain economies, or the beauty of creation? It’s easy to take these things for granted, assuming they’ll always be there. But this passage in Revelation reminds us that we are deeply dependent on God for everything.
More than that, it challenges us to consider where we place our trust. Are you leaning on what feels stable in this world, or are you depending on the One who holds it all together? When the waters of your life are shaken, when things don’t go as planned, where do you turn?
Let this passage remind you to place your trust fully in God. Thank Him for the oceans, the fish, the air you breathe, and every good gift He provides. And remember that even when life feels uncertain, His love and faithfulness never change. No matter what is shaken, you can stand firm in Him.
