More Than Just a Wall
"Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes." - Nehemiah 4:14
When Nehemiah gathered the people to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem, it looked like a construction project on the surface. But if you really look at what was happening, you’ll see this was never just about a wall. This was about their families, their future, and their faith.
God had delivered them from exile. He had brought them back to their city. But the city was vulnerable. The walls were broken. Their identity had been shaken, and their enemies mocked them. Rebuilding the wall was a way to reclaim who they were and remind the world that their God was still faithful.
But there were moments when the work got hard. Enemies rose up. The threats were real. And even some of the people started to doubt whether the wall could be finished. That’s when Nehemiah stepped up and reminded them what was at stake. He told them to remember the Lord and to fight for their people. He called them to build with purpose, not just with tools.
That still applies to you. You may not be laying bricks, but you’re building something. Maybe it’s your marriage. Maybe it’s your children. Maybe it’s your testimony. And sometimes it gets exhausting. You get distracted. You question whether it’s worth it. But just like Nehemiah’s people, you need to be reminded, this is not just about what’s in front of you. This is about the people God has placed around you. This is about your future and your faith.
So keep building. Keep showing up. Keep trusting that God is using every swing of the hammer to shape something eternal. Because this is not just about a wall. It never was.
