Steps That Matter

"So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." - 1 Corinthians 10:31

When it comes to taking care of our health, we often joke more than we act. We know what we should do, but deep down, we just do not feel like doing it. Ice cream seems more satisfying than discipline, and comfort almost always wins out over effort. But what if we stopped treating our physical health like a side issue and instead saw it the way God does?

Scripture does not separate our spiritual life from our physical one. God cares about the whole person. First Corinthians reminds us that whatever we do, including what we eat, what we drink, and how we live, ought to bring Him glory. That includes how we steward our bodies. That includes discipline.

I remember being on a cruise recently, sitting with my father-in-law after a fierce game of shuffleboard. We grabbed some ice cream. As we sat there, we noticed a lady nearby working on a cone at least three times the size of ours. And as she ate, her right arm just kept moving, closed fist, palm up, pumping like she was lifting weights. At first, we thought it might be involuntary. But after ten minutes of watching her rhythm, I finally asked if everything was okay.

She smiled and said, “Oh, it’s nothing. I got a new Fitbit for my birthday, and I’m just trying to get my steps in for the day.”

There’s something almost profound about that. She was doing what most people do, balancing indulgence with a little effort to offset the guilt. But it made me think. Am I doing the same thing spiritually? Am I trying to rack up steps without actually changing my habits?

Discipline is not a seasonal resolution. It is a daily decision to honor God with your body, even when no one is keeping score. Your health may not be the center of your faith, but how you treat your body is absolutely a reflection of your faith. So today, ask yourself, am I living in a way that brings God glory, even in how I treat this physical body He has entrusted to me?
