God’s Workmanship

"For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." - Ephesians 2:10

Have you ever looked at a masterpiece in a museum and marveled at the skill of the artist? The brushstrokes, the colors, the intentionality behind every detail? It’s easy to admire art, but it’s much harder to see ourselves as art. Yet, that is exactly what Scripture calls you. You are not a mass-produced product; you are a custom-designed masterpiece.

The Greek word Paul uses here for "handiwork" is poiema, from which we get our English word "poem." It suggests a work of art, something created with deep thought, emotion, and skill. You are God's poem. You are His song. You are the expression of His creative genius.

This identity is foundational. We often try to find our worth in the "good works" mentioned later in the verse. We think if we do enough, help enough people, or serve enough hours, we will become valuable. But Paul flips the order. We are already God's handiwork. We are already created in Christ. The good works are simply the natural result of who we are, not the cause of it.

God prepared these works "in advance." This means your life isn't a series of random events. The Creator who designed you also designed a specific purpose for you. Your personality, your gifts, your location, and even your history have been woven together by the Master Artist to accomplish things only you can do.

Today, stop criticizing the "art." We are often our own harshest critics, pointing out every flaw and failure. Instead, look in the mirror and remind yourself that you are God's poiema. Identify one unique strength or talent God has given you and ask Him, "How did You design this to be used for Your glory today?”

Prayer:
Master Artist, thank You for crafting me with such intention and love. Forgive me for the times I have looked at Your creation in the mirror with criticism instead of awe. Help me to see myself as Your handiwork. Show me the good works You have prepared for me today, and give me the grace to walk in them. I trust Your hands to continue shaping me into the image of Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.
