Overflow
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” — Romans 15:13 (CSB)
Set a bucket under a downspout in a hard rain and something happens that a lot of us have never let happen spiritually. It fills. Then it keeps filling, and water starts going everywhere, and the ground around it gets soaked. An overflow is just a container that received more than it needed for itself.
Paul calls God the God of hope, and that title is worth pausing on. Hope isn't only something God hands out. It's something He is. Get connected to Him and you're connected to the source, not to a supply that runs low in November.
Then look at what Paul actually prays. He doesn't ask that these believers would have enough hope to get by. He doesn't pray for spiritual survival. He prays they would overflow.
An overflowing life is a life carrying more than it needs. And that extra doesn't stay put. It gets on people. It changes the temperature of a room. It reaches somebody who ran out of their own supply a long time ago and needs somebody else to believe on their behalf for a while.
This is where perseverance turns into mission. When you go through a genuinely hard season with your hope intact, you become living evidence that God is real and His promises hold. That's not just encouraging to you. It's evangelistically powerful, because the world is full of people who tried everything the world offers and came up dry.
Notice how Paul says it happens, though. By the power of the Holy Spirit. Not by trying harder to be a positive person. You don't manufacture overflow. You get under the downspout and stay there.
Name three people in your life who seem to have run out of hope. Pray for them by name today, and ask God to fill you past the point of your own need. You can hold enough hope to survive, or you can carry enough to spill. What are you asking Him for?
Prayer
God of hope, fill me. Not just enough to make it through, but enough to overflow. Let Your joy and peace be so real in me that they spill onto the people around me. Use me to reach somebody who has run completely dry. Do it by Your Spirit, because I can't manufacture one drop of this. In Jesus' name, Amen.
