Choosing Love

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” – 1 Peter 4:8

In marriage, there are moments when the rhythm falters, and enmity threatens to overshadow the intimacy you once shared. But take heart, for there’s a transformative step in this journey: the intentional choice to embrace love.

1 Peter 4:8 implores us to “love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” Choosing love is not a mere sentiment; it’s a deliberate action, a commitment to extend grace even when enmity lurks in the shadows. It is, in essence, a bridge that spans the divide and leads us back to the warmth of intimacy.

When enmity takes root, it often magnifies the flaws and shortcomings within our marriages. It becomes a fog that obscures the beauty of the connection we once treasured. However, the choice to love is a powerful antidote, capable of dispelling the darkness and revealing the enduring bond that unites two hearts.

Love, in its truest form, is not contingent on flawless circumstances or faultless partners. It is a conscious decision to see beyond the surface, to recognize the humanity in our spouses, and to acknowledge that we too are recipients of grace. Love, as 1 Corinthians 13 beautifully describes, is patient, kind, not easily angered, and keeps no record of wrongs – a perfect prescription for healing enmity.

Choosing love means setting aside the grievances, the misunderstandings, and the hurts that may have accumulated. It involves extending forgiveness, offering understanding, and cultivating an atmosphere where intimacy can thrive. It’s a daily commitment to prioritize your spouse’s well-being above your own desires.

If you find yourself navigating the path from enmity to intimacy, pause and reflect on the transformative power of love. Choose to love deeply, just as God loves us. As you do, you’ll witness the restoration of connection, the rebuilding of trust, and the renewal of the intimate bond that makes marriage a sacred journey.
