THE WRATH OF GOD

November 2, 2022

“I cried out to the Lord in my great trouble, and He answered me. I called to You from the land of the dead, and Lord, you heard me! You threw me into the ocean depths, and I sank down to the heart of the sea. The mighty waters engulfed me; I was buried beneath your wild and stormy waves.” – Jonah 2:2-3

What Jonah found out the hard way is that the consequences of obeying God are always far better than the consequences of disobedience. When we disobey God, we experience the wrath of God. That is something Jonah experienced firsthand after running from God to Tarshish.

If you’ve heard the story, you know that Jonah ran from God and got on a boat heading in the opposite direction of God’s directive. He was heading to Tarshish. Why Tarshish? Because it was further than any place on earth from where God was calling him to go. It was literally the furthest west he could go.

And as a result of his disobedience, Jonah would experience the wrath of God. First, a terrible storm came over him on his way to Tarshish. The men in the boat threw him over when they found out the storm was because the wrath of God was following Jonah.

Not only was he thrown into the water, but then he was swallowed by a big fish. Jonah 2:2-3 says, “I cried out to the Lord in my great trouble, and He answered me. I called to You from the land of the dead, and Lord, you heard me! You threw me into the ocean depths, and I sank down to the heart of the sea. The mighty waters engulfed me; I was buried beneath your wild and stormy waves.”

When you run from God, you will pay the price. We talk a lot about the blessings we can expect when we obey God and follow His will. Well, there are also consequences for disobedience. Jonah learned the hard way what the wrath of God looks like. Obeying God is ALWAYS the right choice because when you run from Him, you can expect to feel His wrath.
