THE HEALTHY FEAR OF THE LORD

July 25, 2023

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” – Proverbs 9:10

Fear is a complex emotion that can manifest in various ways. When it comes to fear of the Lord, it is important to understand that it is not a paralyzing, tormenting fear but a healthy and transformative fear rooted in respect, reverence, awe, and submission to God.

The fear of the Lord is often misunderstood in today’s culture, but Proverbs 9:10 provides clarity: it is the starting point of true wisdom and understanding. This fear acknowledges God’s sovereignty, holiness, and majesty. It recognizes our humble position in His presence and our complete dependence on Him.

This healthy fear of the Lord brings about a deep respect and reverence for God. It leads us to recognize His infinite wisdom, power, and love. It compels us to approach Him with awe and a desire to honor and worship Him. As we grow in this fear of the Lord, we gain a greater understanding of His character and His ways.

This fear of the Lord also fosters a sense of submission. It humbles us before God, acknowledging His authority over our lives. We willingly yield to His will and guidance, recognizing that His ways are higher than our own. In this submission, we find freedom and peace, knowing that God’s plans for us are good and trustworthy.

When we fear the Lord in a healthy way, our lives are transformed. We are set on a path of wisdom, understanding, and righteousness. Our priorities realign with God’s purposes, and we seek to live in obedience to His Word. This fear of the Lord serves as a compass, guiding us through life’s choices and decisions.

As we cultivate a healthy fear of the Lord, let us remember that it is not about being afraid of punishment but about embracing a deep reverence and awe for our Heavenly Father. It is an invitation to draw near to Him, to know Him intimately, and to experience the fullness of His love and grace.

May our hearts be filled with a healthy fear of the Lord, recognizing His holiness, submitting to His will, and finding true wisdom and understanding in His presence. Let us live each day in awe of our great God, knowing that His loving guidance will lead us to a life of purpose and fulfillment.
