SURRENDERING PRIDE FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT’S WORK

August 6, 2023

“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” – James 4:6

Pride is a formidable obstacle that hinders the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. It erects barriers, obstructing the transformative power of God’s Spirit. Scripture makes it very clear that God opposes the proud but extends favor to the humble, as we see in today’s key verse. Understanding the detrimental effects of pride is vital in our pursuit of a vibrant and Spirit-filled life.

Pride breeds self-sufficiency and a reliance on our own abilities, knowledge, and accomplishments. It convinces us that we are in control, leading us to neglect our dependence on God. When we succumb to pride, we hinder the work of the Holy Spirit because pride says, “I can do it all on my own.” This self-reliance stifles the Spirit’s leading and limits the depth of our spiritual growth.

Additionally, pride creates a heart that is resistant to correction and transformation. It blinds us to our own faults, making us resistant to the gentle prompting of the Holy Spirit to change and grow. Pride prevents us from acknowledging our need for repentance, forgiveness, and surrender to God’s will. It fosters an attitude that says, “I am always right” and hinders the Spirit’s transformative work within us.

Pride creates division and discord among believers. It fosters an atmosphere of superiority, leading to arguments, jealousy, and strife. Pride hinders unity, as it fuels a desire for recognition and self-promotion rather than working together in harmony. When pride takes precedence, the Holy Spirit’s call for love, unity, and cooperation is drowned out by selfish ambitions.

To experience the fullness of the Holy Spirit’s work, we must humble ourselves before God. Humility acknowledges our need for God’s wisdom, guidance, and empowerment. It recognizes that our strength and understanding are limited and imperfect. Humility says, “I am dependent on God and yield to His will.”

Examine your heart and identify any areas of pride that hinder the Holy Spirit’s work. Humbly confess your self-reliance and seek God’s forgiveness. Embrace humility as a daily practice, opening yourself to the Spirit’s leading, and surrendering control to God. May we be people who walk in humility, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide, empower, and transform us from the inside out.
