ESCAPING THE CAGE OF PRIDE THROUGH RECOGNITION AND CONFESSION

August 9, 2023

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” – 1 John 1:8-9

Pride, like a cage, entraps and confines us, hindering our spiritual growth and distancing us from God’s presence. To break free from its grasp, we must first recognize the presence of pride in our hearts and humbly confess our sins to God. 1 John 1:8-9 affirms this truth by saying that if we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves, but if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive and purify us.

Recognition is the key to escaping the cage of pride. We must honestly assess our thoughts, attitudes, and actions, seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance to reveal any traces of pride within us. Pride often disguises itself as self-righteousness, self-sufficiency, or an elevated view of oneself. By recognizing the presence of pride, we open ourselves to the transformative work of the Holy Spirit.

Confession is the next crucial step in our journey toward freedom. Confessing our pride to God requires humility, vulnerability, and honesty. We must approach God with a contrite heart, acknowledging our sinful nature and our inability to save ourselves. Confession is an act of surrender, admitting that we have fallen short of God’s standard and that we desperately need His forgiveness and cleansing.

Take a moment to examine your heart and mind, seeking God’s revelation of any pride that may be holding us captive. As we recognize its presence, let us humble ourselves before God, confessing our sins and surrendering our pride at His feet. May we experience the freedom that comes from genuine repentance and the restoration of our relationship with God.

As we escape the cage of pride through recognition and confession, we open ourselves to the abundant life God intends for us. Therefore, we need to continually seek His guidance, allowing the Holy Spirit to expose and transform any traces of pride within us. If we do this in humility, we will discover the joy of walking in intimate fellowship with our loving Heavenly Father.
