THE RIGHT KIND OF BELIEF

June 5, 2023

“Whoever believers in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.” – John 3:18

The word “believe” is a confusing word in the English language because that word can mean all sorts of things. I believe that our church is the most amazing church in America, and that is my opinion. I also believe that 2 + 2 = 4, and that is a fact. Those are two different types of beliefs – facts and opinions.

I also believe that certain people exist in this world. I’m talking about people I’ve never seen or met. For instance, my favorite baseball player when I was growing up was Nolan Ryan. Today I can tell you that Nolan Ryan is real. I believe that.

Not only do I believe he is real, but I can tell you all kinds of things about him. He was raised in Alvin, Texas. His dad ran a newspaper business and Nolan grew up throwing 1,500 papers every morning before school. He threw his first no-hitter in little league when he was 12 years old. He was drafted in 1965 in the 12th round by the New York Mets.

He played in the Major Leagues for 27 years for the Mets, Angels, Astros, and Rangers. He had 324 wins, a career winning percentage of .526, was an 8-time All-Star, struck out 5,714 batters…you get the point.

I know a lot about Nolan Ryan. I believe he exists. But my fear today is that some of us “believe” in God the same way I believe in Nolan Ryan. We believe he exists. We know a lot about Him. But we’ve never met Him personally.

Do you believe in God today? Is it the right kind of belief – the kind of belief that is required for salvation? John 3:18 says, “Whoever believers in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.”

It’s not enough just to know He exists. Do you believe in what Jesus did on the cross? Do you believe that He died for your sins? Do you have the right kind of belief?
