BE ANGRY

“Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.” – Ephesians 4:26-27

Do you have anger in your heart? Has someone done something to you that has made you angry, and you just can’t forget about it? Paul addresses anger in Ephesians 4. He gives us a warning!

Ephesians 4:26-27 says, “Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.” This verse is actually just Paul rephrasing what was written in Psalm 4:4. That verse says, “Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent.”

In these verses, we see two directives. Number one, he tells us to “be angry.” Look closer. It’s almost like he is commanding us to be angry. You say, why would he command us to be angry? I believe it is because he knew anger is a natural emotion experienced in our lives.

We are going to become angry at times throughout our lives, and notice, he doesn’t tell us “don’t be angry.” Instead, he says, BE ANGRY… but do it the right way. That is his second directive in these verses.

The first verse: Be angry and do not sin. The second one: Don’t let the sun go down on your anger and don’t give the devil an opportunity.

It is okay to be angry. Anger is a natural emotion that you will experience from time to time. What Paul is saying is not that you can’t be angry, but that we must be able to control that anger in the right way.

Do you ever feel angry? As human beings, we will all feel this emotion from time to time. We aren’t perfect, and neither are the people that we are around. At some point, someone will do something that angers you.

It is not a sin to be angry. What is important is how we control our anger. More on that, tomorrow.
