THE GARMENT OF COMPASSION

November 19, 2023

“Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” – Colossians 3:12

In the bustling marketplace of life, we often find ourselves immersed in our own concerns, hurrying from one task to another. In this fast-paced world, it’s easy to forget the call to compassion that Paul imparts in Colossians 3:12.

Paul’s words offer a problem and a solution. The problem is our tendency to become self-absorbed, neglecting the needs and struggles of those around us. The world encourages us to focus on our own interests, sometimes leaving others overlooked and hurting.

But Paul presents a beautiful solution—compassion. He tells us to “put on compassion,” just as we would dress ourselves each morning. Compassion is not just a feeling; it’s an intentional choice to step into the shoes of another, to understand their pain, and to respond with love and kindness.

Imagine a world where compassion is our daily attire. Picture yourself wearing this garment of compassion as you encounter people from various walks of life. When you see someone struggling, you reach out a helping hand. When you meet someone burdened, you offer a listening ear and a comforting shoulder. When you cross paths with the hurting, you extend a heart full of love and understanding.

The solution to the problem of self-centeredness is to embrace compassion as a way of life. When we do this, we fulfill our calling as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved. We become beacons of His light, reflecting His heart of compassion to a world in desperate need of love and care.

So, how can we put on compassion in our daily lives? It begins with a heart inclined toward others. Start by praying for God to cultivate compassion within you. Seek opportunities to serve and bless those around you. Be a good listener, showing empathy and understanding. Be quick to forgive, just as Christ has forgiven you.

As you put on compassion, you’ll discover the joy of blessing others and the transformative power of love. Compassion becomes not just a garment but an integral part of your character, a reflection of Christ’s love shining through you.

Today, let us follow Paul’s wisdom and choose compassion as our attire. Let it be the solution to the self-centeredness that plagues our world, and may it bring healing, hope, and the love of Christ to those we encounter on this journey of faith.
