REMOVING THE PLANK FROM OUR OWN EYE

Matthew 7:3-5 – “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”
As Christians, we are called to love and support one another in our faith journey, but all too often, we find ourselves quick to point out the sins of others while dismissing the small sins in our own lives. In doing so, we fall into the trap of hypocrisy, failing to address the plank in our own eye while focusing on the speck in our brother’s eye.
Jesus, in His teachings, warns us against this tendency in Matthew 7:3-5. He uses the analogy of a speck of sawdust and a plank to illustrate the absurdity of our actions. Just as it would be foolish to try removing a tiny speck from someone’s eye while having a massive plank obstructing our own vision, it is equally foolish to nitpick at the sins of others without first examining our hearts.
We often excuse our own small sins, considering them insignificant or justifiable, while harshly judging the faults of others. However, in God’s eyes, sin is sin, regardless of its size or scope. We must recognize that our attitude of judgment and self-righteousness can be a stumbling block in our Christian walk.
Addressing the sins in our own lives should be a priority. When we focus on our shortcomings, we come face to face with our need for God’s forgiveness and grace. Humility allows us to acknowledge our imperfections and rely on God’s transformative power to change our hearts.
Let us remember that our judgmental attitudes hinder genuine Christian fellowship and outreach. Instead, by removing the plank from our own eye first, we gain clarity and compassion to help others on their faith journey. In this way, our actions align with Christ’s teachings, fostering an environment of love, grace, and unity within the body of Christ.
As we seek to follow Jesus’ example, may we be slow to judge and quick to extend grace, knowing that we all fall short and are in need of God’s forgiveness. Let us remember to humbly address the small sins in our own lives before pointing out the specks in others. Through genuine love and self-awareness, we can build a stronger and more compassionate Christian community that reflects the heart of Christ to a hurting world.
