Promises Fulfilled in Surprising Ways
"The LORD of hosts has sworn: 'As I have planned, so shall it be, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand.'" - Isaiah 14:24
God’s promises are sure, but they don’t always unfold as we’d expect. Sometimes, He works in ways that make perfect sense to us, following a path that seems logical and straightforward. Other times, God fulfills His promises in ways so unexpected, so supernatural, that we’re left in awe.
Throughout the Bible, we see examples of both. When God told Pharaoh He would send a plague of frogs, He did just that. God told David his son would build the temple, and Solomon later fulfilled that promise. Jesus even foretold the destruction of the temple, and in AD 70, it was destroyed with not one stone left on another. These are examples of promises fulfilled in natural, expected ways. They unfolded just as God said, and we can understand the process He used.
But then there are those moments when God does the unexpected. He told Gideon to whittle down his army from 32,000 men to just 300, promising victory over a force of 135,000 enemy soldiers. No human strategy would suggest that kind of plan, yet God gave Gideon the victory, just as He promised.
In Jericho, He didn’t command a battle strategy but instead had His people march around the city until the walls fell by His power. And when the Assyrians threatened Jerusalem, the Angel of the Lord wiped out 185,000 soldiers in one night. These supernatural acts reveal God’s limitless power and remind us that He’s not bound by our expectations.
When we look at the Christmas story, we see this same mix of the expected and the unexpected. God promised a Messiah, but who could have guessed He would arrive as a baby, born to humble parents, in a stable? The Israelites were waiting for a Savior, but God’s plan unfolded in ways they could never have predicted. God’s promises were fulfilled in both natural and supernatural ways, displaying His faithfulness and creativity.
As you wait on God today, remember that His ways are higher than yours. He may fulfill His promises to you in ways that make sense or in ways that surprise you. Either way, He will fulfill them. Trust that He is faithful and open your heart to His unexpected plans.
