Stewardship Of Time
"Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil." - Ephesians 5:15–16
Time is one of our most precious resources, and unlike money or material possessions, it cannot be saved, stored, or recovered once it's spent. Paul urges us to walk wisely by making the best use of our time, recognizing that we live in days filled with distractions, temptations, and competing priorities.
The phrase "making the best use of the time" literally means "buying up the opportunities." It's the image of a wise merchant who recognizes a good deal and acts quickly to secure it. Every moment presents us with opportunities to honor God, serve others, grow in wisdom, or advance His kingdom. The wise person recognizes these opportunities and seizes them.
In our fast-paced world, time management has become a crucial skill. We have more information, entertainment, and options available to us than any generation in history. Without wisdom, we can easily waste hours on activities that add no value to our lives or the lives of others. We can become busy without being productive, active without being purposeful.
The back-to-school season offers a natural opportunity to evaluate how we're using our time. Students must learn to balance academics, relationships, and personal growth. Parents must juggle work responsibilities with family needs. Teachers must manage classroom time while also preparing lessons and grading assignments.
Wise time stewardship begins with understanding our priorities and purposes. What has God called us to do? What relationships need our attention? What gifts and talents need to be developed? When we're clear about our purposes, we can make better decisions about how to spend our time.
This doesn't mean every moment must be scheduled or productive in a worldly sense. Rest, play, and relationship-building are also important uses of time. The key is intentionality, making conscious choices about how we spend our days rather than simply reacting to whatever demands our attention most loudly.

Lord, help me to use each moment wisely. Grant me discernment to focus on what matters most and the discipline to honor You with how I spend my time. Amen.
