Desperate for Peace
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." - John 14:27
Over the years, I've come to understand something: peace isn’t something you can buy or create on your own. Peace is a gift from God. Our world is desperate for this peace, God’s peace, because it’s drowning in conflict, restlessness, and turmoil. It’s everywhere we look: violence in the streets, wars between nations, tension within communities. Peace feels distant, if not entirely unreachable.
There’s a statistic I came across that reveals just how deeply peace has eluded us. The Personnel Journal reported that out of 3,530 years of recorded history, only 286 years have seen peace. That’s less than 8% of the time! Over 8,000 peace treaties have been signed and broken. The pattern is clear: this world is aching for peace, and no treaty or diplomatic measure seems to hold the answer.
This longing for peace is far from new. Since the earliest days of history, humans have experienced and struggled with conflict. This is why, if you ask someone what they most want for the world, the answer often comes down to “peace.” It’s what people dream of a world where division and strife give way to unity and calm. But in all our longing, human solutions haven’t achieved it.
Jesus knew this world was in desperate need of peace, and He offers something different, something lasting. His peace isn’t like the fleeting, fragile peace the world tries to build, it’s a peace that transcends circumstances, a peace that steadies you in the middle of chaos. The peace Jesus gives doesn’t ignore the troubles around us, but it anchors us through them.
If you find yourself feeling the weight of this world’s unrest or even struggling with conflict in your own life, remember that the peace of Jesus is available to you. It’s a peace that doesn’t depend on circumstances but flows from His presence with you. True peace, the kind this world can’t manufacture, is already here. It’s not just an idea—it’s a promise, and it’s available through Jesus. Will you receive His peace today?
