Getting Dressed Is a Daily Decision

“Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” - Colossians 3:12

Every morning, you make a choice whether you think about it or not. You decide what you are going to wear. No one assumes yesterday’s clothes automatically carry over. What fit the day before gets taken off, and something fresh is put on. Paul uses that exact picture to describe the Christian life, because following Jesus works the same way. Living out the new self is not automatic. It is intentional.

New identity in Christ is a gift, but daily living still involves choice. You wake up forgiven, loved, and secure, but attitudes do not always match that reality. Old reactions show up fast. Irritation, pride, impatience, and defensiveness are always within reach. Grace gives you a new wardrobe, but obedience decides what you actually wear.

Putting on the new self does not mean pretending you feel spiritual. It means choosing alignment even when emotions lag. Compassion instead of indifference. Humility instead of control. Patience instead of frustration. None of those choices is accidental. They come from remembering who you belong to and what kind of life you are called to live.

This is where many people get discouraged. They assume growth should feel natural all the time. When it does not, they think something is wrong. But Scripture never describes growth as effortless. It describes it as intentional and rooted in grace. You are not choosing obedience to earn God’s love. You are choosing obedience because you already have it.

Some days, getting dressed spiritually feels easy. Other days, it feels like effort. Both are normal. What matters is consistency, not perfection. Over time, repeated choices shape habits. Habits shape character. Character begins to reflect Christ more clearly.

If you feel frustrated with slow progress, pause and remember this. God is not surprised by the process. He knows transformation happens one decision at a time. Each morning is another opportunity to live from the new self you have already been given.
