The Foundation Of Your Identity
"But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God." - John 1:12
Have you ever looked in the mirror and wondered who you really are? Not just your name or your job title, but who you are at your core? In a world that constantly tries to define us by our performance, our possessions, or our problems, God offers us something radically different: an identity rooted in His unchanging love.
The apostle John uses powerful language here. The word "right" in Greek is exousia, which means authority or privilege. This isn't something we earn or achieve; it's a gift given to those who receive Christ. When we believe in Jesus, we don't just get forgiveness for our sins. We get adoption into God's family. We become His children with all the rights, privileges, and security that comes with that relationship.
This truth transforms everything. Your identity isn't found in what you do, what you have, or what others think about you. Your identity is found in whose you are. You belong to the King of Kings. You are a child of the Most High God. That's not something that changes based on your circumstances or your performance.
Today, write down three ways the world tries to define you. Maybe it's your job, your past mistakes, or your current struggles. Then, cross each one out and write "Child of God" over it. Carry this reminder with you and speak this truth over yourself whenever those old definitions try to creep back in.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing me to be Your child. When the world tries to tell me who I am, remind me of whose I am. Help me to live from the security of my identity in You, not from the insecurity of the world's definitions. I am Your beloved child, and that changes everything. In Jesus' name, Amen.
