Salt And Light
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden.” — Matthew 5:13-14 (CSB)
Jesus calls His followers to be salt and light in the world, preserving what is good and illuminating truth in darkness. This is both a privilege and a responsibility that requires faithful stewardship of our influence. Salt preserves and enhances flavor, while light reveals truth and provides guidance. We fulfill this calling through how we live, work, speak, and relate to others. Our character and conduct should make others thirsty for the hope we have in Christ. When we steward our role as salt and light well, we create opportunities for others to encounter God's love and truth through our lives.
Being salt and light does not always mean doing something large or public. Often, it looks like quiet faithfulness in ordinary moments. It may be choosing honesty when it would be easier to stay silent, offering kindness when others are harsh, or bringing peace into a tense situation. God uses these daily acts of obedience to preserve what is good and to shine His light into places that need hope.
We also need to remember that our influence is a gift from God, not something we create on our own. The people around us are watching how we respond to pressure, disappointment, success, and need. When we depend on the Holy Spirit, our lives can reflect Christ in a way that points others to Him. Stewarding our influence well means asking God to shape our words, attitudes, and actions so that they honor Him and bless those around us.
Today, take a moment to consider where God has placed you to make a difference. Think about your home, workplace, church, or community. Ask the Lord to show you one specific way to be salt and light today (whether through encouragement, service, truth, or compassion) and then walk in that opportunity with faith and humility.

Lord, help me be effective salt and light in my community. May my life preserve what is good, enhance the lives of others, and shine Your truth in places of darkness. Use me to draw others to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
