His Faithful Love Endures Forever

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his faithful love endures forever.” — Psalm 107:1 (CSB)

This is harvest season in much of the world, and harvest has always been the moment people stop and count. You look at what came in, you compare it to what went in the ground, and you either give thanks or you don't. It's hard to be neutral about a harvest.

Psalm 107 opens with the counting. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. Then it gives the reason, and the reason isn't the harvest. His faithful love endures forever.

That's the same word we saw a couple of weeks ago in Lamentations. Hesed. Covenant love that made a commitment and won't break it. And here the psalmist puts a time stamp on it: forever. Not until you disappoint Him. Not through the end of this calendar year. Forever.

Then read what follows in the psalm, because it's not a list of prosperous people. Verse after verse describes people who wandered in the desert, sat in darkness, made foolish choices that wrecked their lives, and got caught in storms at sea. Each group cries out to God, and each time He rescues them. The refrain repeats: let them give thanks to the Lord for his faithful love.

That's who this psalm is actually for. Not people whose year went well. People who got in trouble, some of it their own fault, and found that God's love was still there when they turned around.

So take the inventory today. Not of what you produced this year, of what He gave. You'll run out of daylight before you run out of items.

Count the harvest today. Write down what God has done in your life in the last twelve months, and don't stop at the obvious things. You can measure this year by what you wanted, or by what He gave. One of those lists is much longer than you think.

Prayer
Lord, You are good, and Your faithful love has never run out on me. Thank You for rescuing me in seasons I got myself into and seasons I never saw coming. Thank You for the mercies I noticed and the hundred I didn't. Today I'm counting Your goodness instead of my losses. Your love endures forever. In Jesus' name, Amen.
