Hope That Won't Leave You Ashamed
“This hope will not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” — Romans 5:5 (CSB)
There's a particular kind of quiet that fills a room right after bad news. The phone call about the test results. The email that starts with "After careful consideration." The conversation where somebody you love tells you they're done. You had hoped. You'd let yourself picture it going the other way. And now you're standing there holding nothing.
If that's happened to you enough times, you start protecting yourself. You stop hoping out loud. You figure it's safer to expect nothing than to get your heart handed back to you again.
Then Paul writes a sentence that ought to stop us in our tracks. This hope will not disappoint us. The word he uses carries the idea of being put to shame, of standing there humiliated with nothing to show for what you believed. Paul says that will never happen to you. Not because life always breaks your way. It won't. But because of what comes next in the verse.
God's love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Poured out. Not measured out with an eyedropper. Not rationed. Poured. And notice where it went. Not into your circumstances, into your heart. The evidence that God loves you was never supposed to be a comfortable life. The evidence is the Spirit of God living inside you right now, testifying that you belong to Him.
So hope in Christ isn't naive. It isn't positive thinking with a Bible verse taped to it. It's confidence in a God whose love is already inside you, whose promises have never once come back void, and who is working in the part of the story you can't see yet.
You may be disappointed by a hundred things this year. You will never be disappointed by Him.
What have you stopped hoping for because hoping hurt too much last time? Bring that exact thing to God today. You can keep your heart guarded and safe, or you can put your hope where it will never be shamed. Which will it be?
Prayer
Faithful Father, You know the places where hope has cost me. I've been let down, and I've been careful ever since. Today I bring You the things I quit praying about. Remind me that Your love isn't a theory, it's been poured into my heart by Your Spirit. Teach me to hope again, and to hope in You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
