Salt And Light

"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden." - Matthew 5:13-14

It’s tempting to think of our identity in Christ as something private—a personal treasure we keep hidden in our hearts. But Jesus uses two metaphors that make private Christianity impossible: salt and light. Neither exists for itself. Salt exists to change the flavor of food, and light exists to dispel darkness. Your identity isn't just about who you are to God; it's about who you are for the world.

In the ancient world, salt was incredibly valuable. It wasn't just a seasoning; it was a preservative. It stopped decay. When Jesus calls you "the salt of the earth," He is saying that your presence should preserve goodness and stop moral decay in your surroundings. You bring a distinct "flavor" of grace, truth, and love that the world cannot produce on its own.

Similarly, light has one primary function: to shine. It doesn't make noise; it simply reveals what is hidden and guides the way. Jesus says, "You are the light of the world"—not that you might be or should try to be. It is a statement of fact. If you have Christ in you, you are light. The only question is whether you are hiding that light under a basket of fear, shame, or apathy.

Notice that Jesus mentions a "city on a hill." This implies a collective identity. While we shine individually, together we form a beacon of hope that cannot be ignored. Our identity is meant to be visible, not for our glory, but so that others "may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven" (v. 16).

Identify one "dark" or "flavorless" situation you will encounter today—perhaps a boring meeting, a tense relationship, or a place where people are discouraged. Before you enter that space, pray: "Lord, help me be salt and light here." Then, do one specific thing to change the atmosphere.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me salt and light. Forgive me for the times I have lost my distinctiveness or hidden my faith out of fear. Help me to live authentically today, preserving what is good and revealing Your truth. May my life shine in such a way that people don't just see me, but see You and give glory to my Father in heaven. In Jesus' name, Amen.
