Trusting The Detour When The Bridge Is Washed Out
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.” - Isaiah 43:2
If you spend enough time exploring the backcountry, you will eventually encounter a roadblock. Imagine you have been hiking for three hours deep into the woods. Your legs are tired, your pack feels heavy, and you are ready to reach your campsite. You turn a familiar corner on the trail, expecting to cross a sturdy wooden footbridge over a deep creek. Instead, you find that recent storms have completely washed the bridge away. The water is rushing fast, the banks are muddy, and crossing right there is simply impossible.
In that frustrating moment, you have a choice. You can sit on the muddy bank and complain about the storm, you can recklessly try to swim across dangerous waters, or you can consult your map to find a safe detour.
We all face washed-out bridges in our lives. You plan your future with great care, expecting the path to be straight and secure. Then, a sudden phone call changes everything. A difficult medical diagnosis, a financial crisis, or a heartbreaking situation with your children can instantly halt your progress. When the way forward is suddenly destroyed, we often feel paralyzed by fear and disappointment. We desperately want to force our way across the obstacle, even when it is unsafe.
But God invites us to trust His rerouting process.
God does not promise that our trail will always be free of hazards. He does not promise that the bridges will never wash out. He promises that His presence will remain with us when we are forced to navigate the deep and rushing waters. We must remember that real faith moves before the miracle, real faith acts before the outcome, real faith obeys before understanding everything. When your plans are ruined, you do not need to understand the entire new route. You just need to trust the One who drew the map.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your constant presence in our lives. When we face washed-out bridges and unexpected detours, please give us the wisdom to pause and look to You for direction. Forgive us for trying to force our own way. In Jesus' name, amen.
