THE GOD OF “WHAT IFS”

September 23, 2022

“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” – Proverbs 19:21

Yesterday, we discussed how in times of isolation and suffering, we can naturally find ourselves asking a lot of questions — specifically, questions that begin with the phrase, “what if…” When we find ourselves in stressful or difficult situations, in trial or tribulation, it is easy to consider the worst possible outcomes.

We begin to think of all the things that can go wrong. “What if I get fired from my job for doing this…”

“What if I told my husband what I did in my past…”

“What if I’m not smart enough…”

“What if I’m I can’t make the payment…”

We can exhaust ourselves with these questions all day. But you know what? They won’t do us any good. The reality is, only God knows what will happen. Only God knows how everything is going to play out in your life. Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.”

And you know what else? He’s got your back. Romans 8:28 famously reminds us, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.”

Then Isaiah 41:10 reminds us of the victory we have in Christ. It says, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

The God you serve is greater than all the “what ifs” you could ever cook up in your mind. He has a plan for all of it. He knows your future. I want you to know today that everything is going to be okay! You are not going to be swallowed by these what ifs. Jesus died for you, therefore victory is yours! Quit living in fear of the what ifs and begin praising the One more powerful than any problem you will ever face!
