PRODUCING FRUIT

December 25, 2022

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” – John 15:5

If Jesus is your identity, you will produce fruit. And that fruit will be on display in every area of your life. “Pastor, what does all this mean? If Jesus is my identity, I will produce fruit?” Jesus clarifies this in John 15:5 when He says, “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.”

As believers and Christ-followers, our identity should be found in Him. It is not about what we do, who we hang out with, or where we work. Our identity is found in the One whom we call Lord.

As our Lord, He is the source of life. Just as branches on a tree need the vine to be alive, so too do we need Jesus. That is what He is talking about in John 15. When we own our identity as Christ-followers and abide in Him by being obedient to His Word, we will grow.

How will we grow? Our character will become more like Christ. And that character will impact others. We live in a society that is “me first.” But Jesus was never like that. Jesus put others before Him constantly. Jesus washed the feet of sinners. He was constantly finding ways to put others before Him, even though He was King Jesus.

And you know what? He did that to set an example for us. It does not matter what position we find ourselves in. It does not matter what “status” we achieve. God wants us to produce fruit so that we can be like Jesus and serve others.

When you put others before yourself, you set an example. You will stand out. And people will begin asking questions: “Why does he do that? Why is she like that?” They aren’t used to seeing someone act this way. And when you do, they will take notice.

When you are obedient to Christ, He will produce fruit within you. That fruit will set an example that impacts not only those closest to you but anyone who is around you. Allow Jesus to be the source of your life and find your identity in Him. When you do, He will produce fruit in your life that will allow you to reach the potential He predestined for your life!
