MAKING DISCIPLES

“One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, ‘Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!’ And they left their nets at once and followed Him.” – Matthew 4:18-20
I’ve met a lot of people in my life who claim to be disciples of Jesus Christ. People from all walks of life say, “I’m a disciple of Jesus.” People with all kinds of beliefs about God say, “I’m a disciple.”
The word “disciple” is common language in our culture and especially within the church, but the truth is many people are claiming that title in their life today, and yet, many have no idea what it really means or understand what is really required to be a true disciple of Jesus.
When you read Matthew 4, you see Jesus walking along the shores of the Sea of Galilee, doing what He does best, and that is making disciples.
Matthew 4:18-20 says, “One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, ‘Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!’ And they left their nets at once and followed Him.”
I love this passage of Scripture because it is where we see the steps to becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ laid out for us. You can summarize these steps with three things Jesus does; Jesus comes to us, Jesus changes us, and Jesus works through us.
After we accept Him, it is our job to make disciples, but never forget the Master of making disciples is Jesus Himself! With this in mind, we are going to go deeper over the next few days into just how Jesus goes about making disciples. In doing so, we will be able to learn so much from Him, not only on how to be a better disciple but also on how to lead others to become disciples as well.
