THE DESTRUCTIVE CONSEQUENCES OF PRIDE

August 4, 2023

“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” – Proverbs 16:18

Pride is a dangerous pitfall that can lead to devastating consequences in our lives. Today’s key verse reminds us that pride precedes destruction, and a haughty spirit paves the way for a fall. Understanding the consequences of pride is crucial for our spiritual growth and well-being.

Pride is the elevation of self, an attitude that exalts our own abilities, achievements, and importance above everything else. It breeds arrogance, self-centeredness, and a disregard for others. When we succumb to pride, we distance ourselves from God’s grace and open the door to a host of negative outcomes.

One of the consequences of pride is the breakdown of relationships. Pride erects walls that hinder meaningful connections and empathy. It creates an atmosphere of superiority, making it difficult for others to approach us or for us to extend forgiveness and reconciliation. Pride isolates us from the love and support of others, leaving us vulnerable and alone.

Pride blinds us to our own faults and weaknesses. It hinders self-reflection and growth, preventing us from acknowledging areas in need of improvement. Pride inhibits our ability to receive correction and guidance, stunting our personal and spiritual development. We become stagnant, trapped in a false sense of self-sufficiency.

In addition, pride leads to a distorted view of God. It undermines our recognition of God’s sovereignty and our need for His guidance and grace. Pride fuels an independent spirit that rejects God’s authority, relying solely on our own understanding and wisdom. This ultimately results in a separation from the source of true life and blessings.

Yet, there is hope. We can choose humility over pride. Humility acknowledges our limitations, weaknesses, and our desperate need for God’s mercy and grace. It opens the door for repentance, transformation, and a deeper reliance on God’s strength and wisdom.

As followers of Christ, we are called to emulate His humility. Jesus humbled Himself, taking on the form of a servant and ultimately sacrificing His life for our redemption. Through His example, we learn that true greatness is found in humility and selflessness.

Let us examine our hearts and confront any pride that may be lurking within us. May we repent and turn towards humility, seeking God’s forgiveness and guidance. As we humble ourselves before Him, He will lift us up, restore our relationships, and grant us the grace to walk in His ways.
