THE PRIDE APPEAL

“For all that is in this world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.” – 1 John 2:16
Over the last two days, we have talked about two of the three ways Satan attempts to create lust in our hearts. The enemy is so good at appealing to our physical, emotional, and prideful wants. He turns looks into lust. He “scratches our itch” and leaves us with desires that are displeasing to God.
If we aren’t careful, we can make choices that will come with far greater consequences, all because of short-term pleasure. What Satan is great at is getting us to think only in the moment.
He gets us thinking about the things we physically want, the things we emotionally want, and the things that appeal to our pride. John tells us this in 1 John 2:16 which says, “For all that is in this world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.”
Satan used the appeal of Eve’s pride when he promised her after eating the apple, she would become wiser. He attempted to appeal to Jesus’ pride by offering him world recognition. To some degree, we all have pride. And that means we are all vulnerable to desiring things that stroke our egos.
The enemy knows this, and that is why he is so good at disguising it in ways that don’t say, “You’re being prideful.” He might offer you fame. He might offer you status. He might offer you power.
All of these things aren’t inherently bad, but they are when we chase them simply for our own prideful desires. Remember who is the Lord of your life. Everything we do is for God’s glory, not our own. Remember this truth when Satan tempts you in ways that sound good, but only from a position of pride.
Jesus is Lord. I pray that you’ll make decisions that reflect that.
