The Courage to Follow God
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”- Joshua 1:9
What’s the most courageous thing you’ve ever done? Take a moment to reflect on that today. Courage comes in many forms—whether it’s standing up for someone, facing a difficult situation head-on, or stepping out in faith when everything feels uncertain.
Maybe you’ve heard of historical figures like Harriet Tubman, who led slaves to freedom, or Anne Frank, who risked her life to hide from the Nazis. Even ordinary citizens showed incredible bravery on 9/11, rushing into danger to help strangers.
These stories of courage are inspiring, but they can also make us pause and wonder, "What courageous acts have I done?" For some, it might be delivering puppies in a bathtub without gloves, while for others, it might be stepping out in faith to face a personal challenge. But here’s something important to remember, every act of courage has a reason behind it.
Think about it: Why do people show courage? It’s not just for the sake of being brave, it’s because there’s something worth fighting for. Whether it’s the lives of others, a cause that matters, or simply doing what’s right, courage is always fueled by a greater purpose.
In the Bible, we see many examples of courageous people, especially in the Old Testament. They weren’t superheroes, they were regular people just like us. Yet, their stories were recorded to teach us about courage and faith in the face of adversity. People like Moses, who stood before Pharaoh demanding freedom for the Israelites, or Joshua, who led the people into the Promised Land despite overwhelming odds, weren’t born fearless, they were empowered by their trust in God.
Joshua 1:9 reminds us of the key to courage: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” Courage doesn’t mean we never feel fear. It means we trust God enough to keep moving forward even when fear is present.
So, what about you? What courageous step is God calling you to take today? Maybe it’s standing up for truth, forgiving someone who’s hurt you, or trusting God with an uncertain future. Remember, you don’t have to be fearless to be courageous, you just need to trust that God is with you every step of the way.
