What Do You Really Need?

"You do not have, because you do not ask." – James 4:2

It’s the day after Thanksgiving. Black Friday. The world is sprinting through store doors and flooding websites, chasing the best deals on things we’ve convinced ourselves we need. New shoes. New gadgets. New upgrades. And while the carts fill and the wallets empty, it’s easy to overlook what really matters.

But what if we paused for just a second? What if instead of asking, “What do I need to buy?”, we asked, “What do I need from God?”

That question cuts deeper than any sales ad ever could. It gets past surface wants and digs into the soul. Because if you're honest, there’s something missing inside you that no product can fill. Maybe it’s peace. Maybe it’s strength. Maybe it’s clarity or boldness or healing. You can fill a closet and still feel empty if you’re ignoring the deeper need God wants to meet.

James 4:2 says you do not have, because you do not ask. Not because God is stingy. But because we get so caught up chasing the wrong things that we forget to ask Him for the right ones. We pray for comfort but not for conviction. We ask for provision but not for purpose. We seek answers but not intimacy.

Today isn’t just about what’s on sale. It’s a reminder that you already have access to everything you need in Christ. He offers wisdom without price tags. Strength without shipping delays. Joy that doesn’t expire. Peace that surpasses the chaos around you. But He will not force it on you. You’ve got to ask. You’ve got to come to Him like someone who is truly hungry for what only He can give.

But you have to stop scrolling long enough to be still and ask God, “What am I lacking in my walk with You? What do I need, right now, to take the next step of faith?” And when He answers, receive it like the treasure it is.

Because there is no greater deal than what grace offers for free.
