Enter His Gates

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. For the Lord is good, and his faithful love endures forever; his faithfulness, through all generations.” — Psalm 100:4-5 (CSB)

Every house has a way you come into it. Some you knock. Some you kick your boots off at the door. Some you walk in yelling that you're hungry. How you enter says a lot about the relationship.

Psalm 100 tells you how to come into God's presence, and the instruction is specific. Enter His gates with thanksgiving. His courts with praise. Gratitude isn't what you work up to after a good worship set. It's the front door.

That's worth noticing, because most of us enter prayer with a list. Here's what's wrong. Here's what I need. Here's who I'm worried about. God welcomes all of that, and Scripture is full of people who prayed exactly like it.

But the psalm suggests a different starting point. Come in thanking Him, and then bring the list.
Gratitude first doesn't mean gratitude only. Psalm 100 is four verses of praise, and the rest of the psalter is full of people who brought God their complaints. This isn't a rule about what you're allowed to say.

The reason is in the next verse. For the Lord is good, and his faithful love endures forever. Gratitude isn't positive thinking. It's a response to something actually true about who God is.
When you start there, the list doesn't disappear. It just gets held by somebody bigger. The problems are the same size. God isn't.

How you walk in shapes what happens once you're inside. That's true of a friend's house and it's true of prayer.

There's a reason the psalm mentions generations. This isn't a good mood you're working up. It's a faithfulness that outlasted everybody who ever wrote about it.

Before you ask God for anything today, spend sixty seconds thanking Him first. You can walk into His presence leading with your list, or leading with His goodness. The list still gets heard either way, but only one of those changes you.

Prayer
Good Father, Your faithful love endures forever and Your faithfulness reaches generations I will never meet. Forgive me for coming to You with my list before my thanks. Today I enter Your gates the way You invite me to. You are good, and I am glad to be Yours. In Jesus' name, Amen.
