The Ten Percent
“But one of them, seeing that he was healed, returned and, with a loud voice, gave glory to God. He fell facedown at his feet, thanking him. And he was a Samaritan.” — Luke 17:15-16 (CSB)
Ten men with leprosy called out to Jesus from a distance, because distance was the only place the law allowed them to stand. He told them to go show themselves to the priests, and on the way, their skin cleared.
Ten men got the miracle. One came back.
Think about what the other nine did with their healing. They weren't villains. They were doing exactly what Jesus told them to do. They went to the priests. They got certified clean. They went home to families who hadn't touched them in years.
They took the gift and ran, and who could blame them. That's what most of us do.
And notice where the healing happened. Not when Jesus spoke, but as they went. They had to start walking while their skin was still wrong. All ten had faith enough to obey. Only one had gratitude enough to return.
But one man stopped in the road, turned around, and came back loud. He fell on his face in front of Jesus and said thank you. And Luke adds a detail that would've stung the original audience: he was a Samaritan. The outsider. The one nobody expected.
Here's the part that should sit with us. Jesus asks, where are the other nine? He noticed. The gratitude mattered to Him.
You've been given things this year that you asked for and received. The question isn't whether God came through. It's whether you ever turned around.
Gratitude is what turns a transaction into a relationship. The nine got what they came for. The one got Jesus. Ninety percent got the miracle and kept walking. Ten percent came back.
Think of one prayer God answered that you never circled back to thank Him for. Go back today, out loud. You can be one of the nine who kept walking, or the one who turned around. Both got healed. Only one got close to Jesus.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I have taken so much from Your hand and kept walking. Forgive me for treating answered prayer like something I was owed. Today I am turning around. Thank You for the things I asked for and received and never mentioned again. Keep me from being one of the nine. In Jesus' name, Amen.
