The Secure Identity Of God's Children

"The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, 'Abba, Father.'" - Romans 8:15

Yesterday we celebrated the perfect love of our Heavenly Father. Today we explore what it means to live as His adopted children with the security that comes from belonging to Him. You don't have to live in fear because you have been adopted into God's family.

Paul contrasts two ways of living: as slaves who live in fear or as adopted children who live in security. The Spirit you received when you became a Christian doesn't make you a fearful slave but a confident child. This fundamental shift in identity changes everything about how you approach life.

The word "adoption" here is significant. In Roman law, adopted children had full rights and privileges equal to biological children. When God adopts you, you don't become a second-class citizen in His kingdom. You become a full heir with complete access to all the benefits of being His child.

The phrase "Abba, Father" is deeply personal. "Abba" is an Aramaic word similar to "Daddy" or "Papa." It speaks of intimacy, affection, and security. You can approach the God of the universe with the confidence of a beloved child running to their father.

Practice calling God "Abba Father" in your prayers today. If that feels uncomfortable, ask yourself why. Are you still living like a fearful slave rather than a secure child? Allow the truth of your adoption to sink deep into your heart and change how you approach God.

Prayer:
Abba Father, thank You for adopting me into Your family and giving me the security of being Your child. Help me to live from this secure identity rather than from fear or insecurity. When anxiety tries to grip my heart, remind me that I am Your beloved child with full access to Your love, provision, and protection. In Jesus' name, Amen.
