The Perfect Father's Love
"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" - 1 John 3:1
On this Father's Day, we celebrate not just earthly fathers but the perfect love of our Heavenly Father. For some, this day brings joy as they remember loving fathers who shaped their lives. For others, it brings pain as they remember absent, abusive, or inadequate fathers. But regardless of your earthly father experience, you have a perfect Heavenly Father who loves you completely.
John marvels at the "great love" that God has "lavished" on us. The word "lavished" suggests extravagant, overwhelming abundance. God doesn't give His love sparingly or conditionally. He pours it out generously on His children. This is the kind of father love that many never experienced from earthly fathers but that all can receive from their Heavenly Father.
The result of this lavish love is that "we should be called children of God." This isn't just a title; it's a relationship. God doesn't just love us from a distance; He adopts us into His family. We become His children with all the security, provision, and identity that comes with that relationship.
John emphasizes the reality of this relationship: "And that is what we are!" This isn't wishful thinking or spiritual symbolism. You are literally, actually, truly a child of God. You have a perfect Father who will never leave you, never disappoint you, and never stop loving you.
If you had a loving earthly father, thank God for that gift and recognize it as a reflection of your Heavenly Father's love. If your earthly father experience was painful, allow God to heal those wounds and experience the perfect father love He offers you. If you're a father yourself, ask God to help you reflect His fatherly love to your children. Whatever your situation, rest in the truth that you are a beloved child of the perfect Father.
Prayer:
Abba Father, thank You for lavishing Your love on me and making me Your child. For those celebrating loving earthly fathers today, I thank You for that gift and ask You to bless those relationships. For those carrying father wounds, I pray for healing and for them to experience Your perfect father love. For fathers trying to love their children well, give them wisdom, grace, and strength. Help us all to rest in the security of being Your beloved children. Thank You for adopting us into Your family and loving us with perfect, unfailing love. In Jesus' name, Amen.
