Co-heirs With Christ
"Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory." - Romans 8:17
Being God's child means more than just having His love; it means having His inheritance. You're not just adopted into God's family; you're made an heir of everything He owns. You share in Christ's inheritance as a co-heir of God's kingdom.
Paul follows a logical progression: if we are children, then we are heirs. In God's family, there are no disinherited children. Every child of God has a full inheritance waiting for them. This inheritance isn't something you earn through good behavior; it's something you receive through relationship.
The phrase "co-heirs with Christ" is staggering. You don't get a small portion while Jesus gets the rest. You share equally in the inheritance with the Son of God Himself. What belongs to Christ belongs to you as His adopted sibling.
Paul acknowledges that this inheritance includes both suffering and glory. Following Christ means sharing in His sufferings in this world, but it also means sharing in His glory in the world to come. Your identity as God's heir gives you perspective on both present trials and future hope.
Meditate on what it means to be a co-heir with Christ. What does this truth tell you about your worth, your future, and your access to God's resources? Let this reality change how you pray, how you face challenges, and how you view your future.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I'm overwhelmed by the truth that You've made me a co-heir with Christ. Thank You for this incredible inheritance that I don't deserve but receive through Your grace. Help me to live with the confidence and security that comes from knowing I share in Christ's inheritance. In His name, Amen.
